Although February is a short month, we managed to make the most of it! We started off the month with a Super Bowl Party at church. Throughout Matt's vicarage, he has been responsible for several events--disc golf, movie nights, and now the Super Bowl party. Several people from church had expressed an interest in a church-sponsored party for the big game, and Matt enjoyed figuring out how to project the game on the big screen and planning fun activities for the afternoon. He had a kids corner with toys and coloring sheets and a youth room set up with Madden 2009 on the Wii so that parents could kick back and enjoy the game.
Megan enjoyed some time away at a weekend-long Pastors' Wives Retreat in San Juan Bautista. Laura, the real pastor's wife, went too... and contrary to their fears of being the only ones under 40, there were other young pastor's wives and vicar's wives too. It was a weekend of fun and frivolity. Megan was also amused to find some pictures of her sister, Lani, in an album from past retreats--Lani went on the Pastors' Wives Retreat when she and her husband were in California for their vicarage!
We celebrated Valentine's Day at the youth-sponsored Comedy Night. This dinner auction is the youth group's main fundraiser for the year to help them afford their summer and winter camps. The comedy entertainment for the evening was an improv group from southern CA called Fishes and Loaves. Megan was happy that the evening ended with Matt winning the raffle drawing for the Chocolate Basket--Mmm!
We celebrated Matt's birthday with dinner at The Elephant Bar and a movie--Paul Blart, Mall Cop. Movie choice was 100% Matt's. Megan made a cake for Matt too--all from scratch. She made a yellow cake with buttercream icing and strawberries, and for a first attempt at making a cake without a mix, it turned out quite nicely!

And with the end of February begins the season of Lent. The sermon series that Matt and Pastor Nate have chosen draws discipleship themes from the Scriptures and uses Wm. Paul Young's book The Shack for illustrative purposes. While most LCMS churches would probably cringe at the idea of using this book as a theme for Lent, we are actually looking forward to it. The church bought over 500 copies to give out so everyone can read it throughout their Lenten journey. Already it has stirred up some interesting discussion in the church!
And, saving the best for last... we are an Aunt and Uncle again!
Megan's sister Lani gave birth to her second child, a precious little girl. Haven Marie Palmer was born on February 25th at 10:42 a.m. weighing in at 7 pounds, 10.9 ounces and 21 inches long. Lani and Jon have asked us to be godparents, so Megan gets to fly home for Baptism on March 8th. (Matt has to stay behind to preach while Pastor Nate is at the confirmation retreat... )
